Did you know that in some cultures, this fruit’s name has its origins in the Bible? In German-speaking countries, the currant is called Johannisbeere. The name is said to be linked to St. John, since the fruits are usually ripe around 24th June, the Feast of St. John the Baptist.
Many peoples consider the blackcurrant to be a symbol of long life and robust health. In early times, it was observed that currants helped to relieve skin complaints, due to the gamma-linoleic acid contained in their seeds. Blackcurrants are reputed to calm the nerves, improve the mood and concentration, stimulate the metabolism and strengthen the immune system. The berries contain vitamin C, fibre, potassium, iron, the colouring anthocyanin, and have a very high antioxidant capacity of 7957 µmol TE (ORAC value).
The body’s defence mechanisms are strengthened by foods rich in antioxidants, and this helps to neutralise excessive production of free radicals. The recommended ORAC daily requirement is between 5000 and 7000 .
Dried organic Fairtrade blackcurrants are dark red to black, and naturally shiny. Their consistency is soft. The berries rarely stick together. The blackcurrants flavour is very intense and fruity. The berries are slightly sour.
Origin and Production:
Our super aromatic organic Fairtrade Blackcurrants come from 2 Fairtrade smallholder producer groups (Turob Bobo and Turkiston Gulba) in the scenic environment of the highland valley of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. These aromatic and intensely fruity organic blackcurrants grow in a hot and cloudless summer environment. The fields are situated along the ancient Silk Road as travelled by Alexander the Great and Marco Polo centuries ago. The dry desert climate with little precipitation during the summer time, coupled with high altitude day and night time temperature differences, provides ideal growing conditions for organic farming and enhanced flavour formation.
Only fully ripe blackcurrants are harvested each day during the harvest period and immediately brought to the processing factory at Silk Road Organik Foods for solar drying. There the blackcurrants
are first washed and cut. Then the blackcurrants are carefully solar dried maintaining raw-food-quality and thereafter hand sorted.
The blackcurrants are pressure treated, controlled and laser cleaned in Austria. During the pressure process, the combination of pressure and time ensures that the product is completely free of pests. When undergoing several rounds of cleansing in the laser cleaning facility afterwards, the organic Aronia berries are checked individually.
