Dill – a delicate spice and medicinal plant.
Cucumber salad wouldn’t be the same without dill, a thought that Ancient Egyptians might have considered when cultivating dill as a spice and medicinal plant. We will never know for sure, but during mediaeval times, dill played a role in relieving indigestion, stomach cramps and bad breath .
Many well-known practitioners of herbal medicine such as Hildegard von Bingen and Paracelsus prescribed dill for many other ailments including hiccups, vomiting, abdominal pain, and umbilical hernias. Dill was reputed to drive away demons and bring newly married women fame and honour .
On a more material level, dried dill contains fairly high levels of potassium, calcium, sodium and the natural essential oils that give dill its fragrance.
Dill has a very high antioxidant capacity of 4392 µmol TE (ORAC value = Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity). By consuming foods rich in antioxidants, the body’s defence mechanisms are fortified, counteracting excess production of free radicals. A daily ORAC requirement of 5000 to 7000 is recommended .
High quality through attention to detail! Our intensely fragrant organic Fairtrade dill stems have a very aromatic taste with a strong dill smell. This intensive natural taste is only possible because our dill is gently sundried and gently produced from pre-sorted whole dill with the greatest care.
Origin and Production:
We source our organic fairtrade dill stems exclusively from Uzbekistan / Samarkand. The fields and farmers are certified for organic and FAIRTRADE products. The farmers are part of a large Fairtrade community made up of 3 groups, Dustkul Bogi, Turkiston Gulba and Turob Bobo. 1,000 farmers and their families belong to the community. By working with Fairtrade, the farmers can provide their families with a secure income and offer their children new opportunities.
After being harvested by hand, the stems gently dried using solar energy. The drying process is very eco-friendly, using a solar drying method that has a minimal impact on the product. The dill stems are then coarsely chopped.
The dill stems are pressure treated and controlled in Austria. During the pressure process, the combination of pressure and time ensures that the product is completely free of pests.
